The human body contains about 1.0 to 1.5 kg of calcium. It is the most abundant mineral in the human organism in terms of quantity. Almost all of it is bound in bones and teeth as calcium phosphate and calcium hydroxyappatite. About 0.4% is found in our cells and only 0.1% of the body calcium is found dissolved in our blood plasma. Calcium, in conjunction with vitamin D, remains at the center of the osteoporosis discussion.
